ASEAN PEOPLES' FORUM - Thematic 8: Inclusive and Gender-Sensitive Maternity Protection and Care Systems in the ASEAN Economy

Martabat PJ proudly hosted a key session focused on reframing and investing in inclusive and gender-sensitive maternity protection and care systems within the ASEAN economy on 21 May 2025. The session emphasised the urgent need to establish supportive policies that protect mothers, care workers, and families across the region.

This initiative was part of the ASEANPeoples@ASEAN2025 forum, organized in collaboration with partners from Malaysia and the ASEAN region.

Together, we highlighted the importance of strengthening social protection and care systems as fundamental to inclusive and sustainable development.

In 2025, ASEAN will develop official guidance to translate the commitment of the declaration on ‘Strengthening the Care Economy Resilience Towards the Post-2025 ASEAN Community’ into concrete actions and serve as a toolkit for member states to adapt and implement. ASEAN will also review the last ten-year social protection framework and plan for its social protection vision 2045. This presents a crucial opportunity for civil society advocacy to push for universal social protection and care rights for all.

Maternity protection and a gender-sensitised care economy rarely receive the national attention they deserve. Yet these issues are vital national agendas because they significantly impact economic growth and social wellbeing.

Visit to Urban Farms

In March 2024, we paid a visit to two farms - in Kapar and in Cyberjaya to learn to learn how Digital Technology is changing the way Agriculture is being done; and to see just how these new methods can be adopted to an urban setting like Petaling Jaya. We met Encik Naim who runs his own chili farm, and Mr. Francis of Urban Farm Tech who took us on a tour of their respective farms and explained to us the amazing work that they do. We were also accompanied by Mr. Saiful from Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation who had helped us organise the visits.

Mammogram

In both 2022 and 2023, Martabat PJ organised a trip for women from the B40 community in PJ to the GHHS Healthcare Centre in Seri Kembangan for a free mammogram screening. The trips were meant to ease access to early cancer screening as early detection is key to having the best chance for successful treatment.
